Biography

Early Life

Eddie Brock began his career as a freelance photographer, working throughout New York and competing for assignments with other photographers. He was older and more experienced than Peter Parker, as well as more artistic and athletic. Eddie was also an avid rock fan and someone Peter found easy to talk to despite seeing him as professional competition.

Brock began receiving assignments from the Daily Bugle and quickly established himself within the newspaper. His ambitions, however, went beyond ordinary photography. Eddie became increasingly determined to secure his position and surpass his competitors, eventually becoming the Daily Bugle's lead paparazzo.

As his career progressed, Eddie adopted increasingly invasive methods. He paid photographers throughout New York to act as his eyes and gather information for him. He also spread lies about his coworkers, including Wendy Thornton and Peter Parker, in an effort to eliminate his competition.

Eddie's obsession with professional success eventually destroyed the reputation he had spent years building. After crossing a line with his increasingly invasive paparazzi tactics, he lost his dream job at the Daily Bugle. J. Jonah Jameson fired him after Eddie's actions had already placed the newspaper in serious legal trouble.

Having lost his career and reputation, Eddie's resentment toward Spider-Man grew. He held Spider-Man responsible for the destruction of everything he had worked to achieve.

Eddie Brock's hatred of Spider-Man eventually brought him together with the symbiote that Peter Parker had worn as his black suit.

After Kraven's final hunt, Peter Parker abandoned the symbiote at Our Lady of Saints Church. The creature had become increasingly violent, constantly encouraging Peter to act with greater brutality. Peter ultimately forced it to release him using the deafening sound of the church bells.

That same night, Eddie Brock was inside the church. Having lost his career and reputation because of his actions and blaming Spider-Man for his downfall, Eddie shared the symbiote's hatred and desire for revenge.

The symbiote bonded with Brock, creating Venom. Their shared resentment toward Spider-Man united the two into a single entity driven by envy, hatred, and revenge. Together, Eddie and the symbiote became one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies.

Venom later escaped from the Life Foundation and bonded with Eddie Brock, amplifying his rage and psychological instability. Spider-Man eventually confronted him and was only able to stop him with the assistance of Silver Sable, a Life Foundation field operative who possessed the necessary protocols to contain the creature.

During the confrontation, Eddie Brock was subdued, but the symbiote retreated deep into his body, using him as a living shell. Authorities were unable to separate the two organisms and transferred Brock to a maximum-security prison. Further examinations revealed that the symbiote had fused itself to Eddie's bloodstream and vital organs, apparently hiding within his body.

The recovered symbiote samples allowed the Life Foundation's scientific operation to be dissolved and its researchers absorbed into the United States Department of Defense. Under Dr. Michael Morbius, the researchers developed an antigen capable of placing the symbiote under the complete control of its host.

Years later, Eddie remained imprisoned while the symbiote continued to exist within him. His presence became important to the government's development of Agent Venom, as the authorities knew the organism had previously bonded with Brock.

Eddie eventually escaped from prison.

At Seagate Prison, Eddie Brock expelled the Venom symbiote from his body before being embraced by the black creature once again. The reunion triggered a violent prison riot, with Venom tearing through correctional officers and helping initiate a massive breakout of dangerous inmates.

During the chaos, Miles Warren was conducting unauthorized experiments on Brock. Warren had been ordered by powerful figures to harvest stronger symbiote samples directly from Eddie, performing experiments beyond those authorized by the United States government. While the prison riot continued above, Warren kept Eddie restrained in the deepest isolation wing and used him as the source for additional symbiote material.

The harvested symbiote was subsequently used in an experiment involving Cletus Kasady, resulting in the creation of Carnage.
