Peter Parker, a brilliant but humble teacher and photographer from New York, became Spider-Man at the age of 15 after being bitten by a genetically modified spider. Haunted by the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter turned tragedy into purpose, dedicating his life to protecting others under the famous motto: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Biography

Early Life

Peter Parker was orphaned at a young age and raised by his aunt, May Parker, and uncle, Ben Parker. He grew up in Queens and attended Midtown High, one of the poorest public schools in the country. Frustrated by the school's failing education system and the administration of Principal Miles Warren, Peter and Gwen Stacy founded SEEK, a student movement dedicated to improving education. Their activism eventually led Midtown High to file criminal charges against the movement's five founders, placing Peter and Gwen at the center of a conflict with the school administration.

Around the same time, Peter and Gwen were invited by their biology teacher, Dr. Curt Connors, to represent Midtown at an Oscorp science fair. After winning the competition, they toured Oscorp with Harry Osborn. During the visit, Peter was unknowingly bitten by a mysterious radioactive spider connected to Oscorp's research. Soon afterward, he developed extraordinary physical abilities and a spider-sense. New York soon became fascinated by rumors of a young masked vigilante in a homemade costume calling himself Spider-Man.

Peter initially struggled to reconcile his new abilities with his ordinary life. When SEEK students decided to break into Midtown High to protest the administration, Peter secretly helped them as Spider-Man, confronting Scorpion, the school's heavily armed security guard. The situation escalated when parents and police arrived, leading to a firefight and the collapse of the building. Peter was preparing to save everyone when Ben threw himself over him, shielding his nephew from the debris. Mortally wounded, Ben reminded Peter that the power he possessed had to be matched by responsibility.

Ben's death became the defining moment of Peter's life. From then on, he committed himself to using his abilities to protect others, becoming increasingly dedicated to his new identity as Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man

By 1990, Peter had been Spider-Man for two years. He was studying Biophysics at Columbia University alongside Gwen and Harry while continuing to develop his life as a superhero. His relationship with Gwen had become complicated, particularly after she began dating Flash Thompson, while Peter's aunt repeatedly encouraged him to volunteer at F.E.A.S.T., where he met Mary Jane Watson, an aspiring actress who had recently moved to New York. Peter immediately became fascinated by her.

Peter's superhero activities increasingly brought him into conflict with Oscorp. He began investigating the company's operations, uncovering evidence of corruption and destroying shipments connected to its illegal activities. This brought him into direct opposition with Norman Osborn, who despised Spider-Man for interfering with his company and exposing his connections to the political establishment.

Peter also began building a career as a photographer. Balancing college, photography and Spider-Man proved increasingly difficult, but his photographs eventually earned him a position at the Daily Bugle, where he worked under J. Jonah Jameson. He learned to survive Jameson's constant hatred of Spider-Man by responding to his rants with sarcasm and humor.

Sensational Spider-Man

Peter's relationship with George Stacy became increasingly important as he continued operating in New York. After Stacy's death, Peter made the decision to abandon the responsibilities of an ordinary life and devote himself almost entirely to being Spider-Man. On the same day, while investigating a Life Foundation ferry, he encountered an unusual substance that bonded to his body, becoming a living symbiotic suit.

The symbiote greatly enhanced Peter's abilities and gradually became an extension of Spider-Man himself. Reed Richards studied the organism and discovered that it displayed no independent aggression beyond what Peter projected onto it. Peter nevertheless became increasingly dependent on the suit as he withdrew from his ordinary life.

By 1999, Peter had dropped out of college and distanced himself from Gwen and Harry. He continued working as a photographer, now for Robbie Robertson at the New York Bulletin, after leaving the Daily Bugle following Eddie Brock's rise as its lead paparazzo. At the same time, Peter became increasingly isolated as people connected to him began falling victim to the Sin-Eater. Peter's only true confidante within the NYPD was Captain Jean DeWolff, who secretly worked with Spider-Man to investigate the murders. Peter trusted her enough to access places no vigilante could reach. Their investigation eventually led him directly into the Sin-Eater's path.

Peter's increasingly violent world eventually attracted the attention of Kraven the Hunter. Kraven drugged Spider-Man and buried him alive, stealing the symbiote and using it to impersonate Peter. Wearing the living suit, Kraven became a brutally violent version of Spider-Man, breaking bones and murdering criminals in an attempt to understand what it meant to be his prey.

Peter eventually overcame the sedative, broke through his coffin and clawed his way out of the grave. He confronted Kraven at the cemetery, where the hunter declared his mission complete and then took his own life. Peter reclaimed the symbiote and buried Kraven himself, shaken by what had happened and by the realization of what his own power could become in someone else's hands. The experience permanently changed the symbiote. It had learned from Kraven's violence and began urging Peter to become increasingly brutal.

Realizing that the creature was no longer something he could control, Peter went to Our Lady of Saints Church and used the sound of its bells to force the symbiote from his body. The creature escaped and immediately bonded with Eddie Brock, creating Venom.

Spectacular Spider-Man

By 2001, Peter had spent two years trying to take control of his life again. After revealing his secret identity to Gwen Stacy, he helped change her political position and brought her closer to the movement supporting vigilantes. Peter was also reconsidering his future with Spider-Man, wondering whether abandoning the mantle might allow him to live a normal life. That possibility disappeared when Green Goblin kidnapped Gwen and threw her from a great height. This time Peter was there to save her, unlike when George Stacy died, but even his powers were not enough. Gwen died in front of him, leaving Peter devastated.

Peter reunited with Mary Jane at Gwen's funeral. The two rekindled their relationship, determined to recover the years they had lost, and began planning to marry. At the same time, Peter became involved with the Heroes for Hire system, allowing vigilantes to operate legally in the United States with legal assistance from Nelson and Murdock. His growing political importance also attracted the attention of Captain America and Iron Man.

Peter continued balancing several careers. He taught Chemistry and Physics in public schools, worked with Ned Leeds at Oscorp, and helped J. Jonah Jameson oversee the digital edition of the Daily Bugle. He also helped develop the Daily Bugle Podcast with Gloria Grant while maintaining his life as Spider-Man.

After eventually returning to complete his education, Peter graduated and became inspired by his former professor Otto Octavius, who demonstrated to him the value of teaching and mentorship. Peter decided to pass his own knowledge on to a new generation and began working as a substitute teacher throughout New York. At Brooklyn Visions Academy, he met Miles Morales, one of his brightest students. Peter quickly came to regard Miles as his main pupil, recognizing his intelligence and curiosity even though Miles remained unaware of his teacher's identity as Spider-Man.
