Early Life

Erik Josten spent his early adult years serving in the military, where he acquired the tactical knowledge, combat skills, and operational experience that would shape the rest of his life.

After leaving military service, Erik turned those skills into a profession as a mercenary. Rather than fighting for ideals or causes, he accepted assignments from powerful individuals willing to pay for his services. Over time, he became involved in numerous illegal operations and developed a reputation as a reliable enforcer within the criminal underworld.

Among the figures who employed Erik was Baron Zemo, whose criminal network frequently relied upon mercenaries and hired operatives. Despite his experience and usefulness, Erik remained little more than another expendable henchman within the Masters, lacking the power or influence possessed by the organization's more prominent members.

His fortunes changed when fellow Master Elihas Starr took an interest in him. Starr recognized Erik as either an ideal candidate for enhancement or the perfect test subject for one of his experiments.

Using Pym Particle technology stolen following the destruction of Vernon Van Dyne's laboratory, Starr began subjecting Erik to repeated exposure. The experiments altered his body, allowing him to withstand what became known as Particular Doses—massive intravenous infusions of Pym Particles capable of increasing his size to colossal proportions for several hours at a time.

The process transformed Erik into a genuine superhuman, granting him the ability to become a giant capable of matching some of the most powerful heroes on Earth. However, the enhancement carried a severe cost. Continuous use of the Particular Doses risked causing irreversible damage to his heart, meaning every transformation came with potentially life-threatening consequences.

Despite these dangers, Erik continued serving the Masters, now possessing the power that elevated him far beyond the role of ordinary hired muscle.

In the years that followed, Erik became part of the government's initiative to transform former criminals into America's new generation of sanctioned heroes. Under this program, he adopted the heroic identity of Atlas, serving as the representative hero of Texas.

Unlike some of his fellow reformed villains, Erik gradually began to embrace the ideals behind the role he was playing. While others viewed their new identities as disguises or opportunities for personal gain, Atlas found genuine inspiration in the chance to become something better than the mercenary he once was.

His growing dedication to heroism became noticeable even among his teammates. The example set by Atlas was significant enough that it inspired some of the other disguised criminals around him to consider pursuing a similar path of redemption rather than simply maintaining their heroic personas as a cover.

Today, Atlas frequently appears before the public as Texas' Atlas, featured on magazine covers and celebrated as one of the faces of America's newest generation of heroes. His popularity and sincerity stand in sharp contrast to the life he once led as a mercenary working for criminal masterminds.

Although his past remains rooted in illegal operations, Baron Zemo's schemes, and the dangerous experiments that granted him his powers, Erik Josten has become one of the few members of the program who appears to genuinely believe in the heroic identity he was given. Once a disposable soldier and criminal enforcer, he now stands as a towering symbol of redemption, proving that even those shaped by violence and crime can choose a different path.
