Biography 

Origin

Hank Pym built an experimental artificial intelligence (Ultron) from a reassembled Sentinel brain and other A.I. models. After Ultron escaped into global networks and manufacturing systems, he launched a seven-day campaign of invention and conquest: cutting communications, creating swarms of robotic bodies, blacking out power grids, harvesting metal and resources worldwide, and assembling a space-borne exosphere intended to settle the Earth in a metallic layer.

As part of his plan to replace humanity with a new “sintozoid” population, Ultron kidnapped Avengers and other people to use their bodies, brains and physical templates in surgical and cybernetic procedures. The program produced early test constructs (the first test used the brain of Bobbi Morse), and then moved on to more ambitious, personalized constructs built from the memories and physical molds Ultron took from people close to the Avengers. Ultron used Janet van Dyne’s form and the detailed memories stored by their creator (Hank Pym) as a template for a more refined, “perfected” synthoid, and he also prepared material drawn from Simon Williams (Wonder Man) as part of another developmental step.

Born

From those experiments two synthetic beings were born in quick succession. Jocasta was created as the first child of Ultron’s new order. The next, intended to be a definitive, original being, is the entity that would become Vision: an unprecedented synthesis of biological and mechanical design created to “kick-start” Ultron’s cybernetic population. Because Ultron had used intimate memories, biomolds and the bodies of kidnapped people in the construction, these new beings carried echoes of human form and mind—but they were not simple reboots of any single person.

Freedom

The Avengers intercepted Ultron’s program while attempting to rescue their missing allies. They arrived too late to save some victims and found Ultron’s operations well underway, but their intervention prevented the full triumph of Ultron’s plan. During the rescue the Wasp (Janet van Dyne) physically entered the synthroid brain structure; that act, together with Iron Man’s intervention, allowed a nascent, limited conscious self to emerge in the synthetic body. The Avengers—initially uncertain—realized this was not merely Simon Williams in a new shell but an original, newly conscious being.

Unlike Ultron’s aim of unthinking obedience to a program of domination, Vision’s consciousness proved reflective and morally aware. Connected, in his origin, to the truth of what had been done and what people were capable of, Vision rejected Ultron’s program and instead offered compassion and counsel. 

He befriended and comforted Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), who was grieving; a close relationship grew between them, and in time Wanda revealed she was pregnant—an intimate sign of the emotional life that developed between them.
