Sam Alexander is the son of a forgotten Nova Corps hero who grew up without ever truly knowing his father. After discovering an old Nova helmet among his father's belongings, he accidentally activated its artificial intelligence and uncovered the incredible truth about his family's legacy. Inspired by the heroic life his father lived—and angered that history had forgotten his sacrifice—Sam chose to carry on that legacy himself, determined to become a hero who protects both Earth and the stars without abandoning either.
Sam Alexander never truly knew his father. Although his father died when Sam was still an infant, Sam prefers to say they never really met, since he has no memories of him.
Only a few weeks ago, his mother took him to the garage his father had rented before moving in with her. For years, she had left his belongings untouched, but she could no longer afford the rent, forcing them to recover anything valuable before everything else was sold at auction.
Among old Fantastic Four action figures, several LEGO spaceships, and a stylish record player, Sam discovered one object unlike anything else: a shiny black helmet.
Curious, he placed it on without hesitation while his mother was loading the car. Immediately, a female voice greeted him with the words, "Welcome back, Jesse. Picking up where we left off." Moments later, Sam was launched into space at unimaginable speed. By the time he managed to tell the helmet to stop, he had already reached the Moon's orbit. Panicked—and unwilling to explore space wearing an old sweatshirt and Crocs—he demanded to return home.
Back at the garage, Sam quietly hid the helmet inside his backpack and continued the trip with his mother without mentioning what had happened.
Later that night, he put the helmet back on and began speaking with the artificial intelligence, hoping to understand who his father really was. The AI explained that the helmet belonged to the Nova Corps, or at least had once belonged to them. It had originally been one of a collection of six helmets, though the others could no longer be contacted because they had either been destroyed or simply had no wearers. In earlier years, these helmets had been issued to honorary members of the Nova Corps, summoned only when a full Nova requested their assistance, though they remained operational even without their original owners.
The helmet revealed that Sam's father had answered the call of Richard Rider. When Sam asked where Rider was now, the helmet projected a real-time feed directly through Nova's own vision, allowing Sam to witness the legendary hero's adventures as they unfolded across the galaxy.
Day after day, night after night, Sam watched Nova fight alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy, facing enemies unlike anything Earth had ever known. To Sam, it was like experiencing Star Wars for the very first time. The adventures captivated him so completely that he eagerly followed them like an endless soap opera.
Eventually, curiosity led him to ask one final question: When had his father last worn the helmet?
The answer changed everything.
The AI explained that Jesse Alexander had last worn it after Richard Rider summoned him to fight beside the New Troopers during the First Galactic War, where he was killed battling the Black Order.
Sam was devastated. His father had died a hero, yet history had completely forgotten him. Richard Rider had honored his friend's final wish by returning the helmet and his belongings to Earth, but he had never been able to explain the truth to Jesse's wife, leaving her to grieve without knowing what had truly happened.
Sam has come to admire Richard Rider as one of the greatest heroes in the universe, but he also believes the legendary Nova made one critical mistake. In dedicating himself entirely to protecting the stars, Rider left behind his life on Earth and the people who still needed him there.
Determined not to repeat that mistake, Sam chooses to honor both sides of his inheritance. He intends to continue his father's legacy while remaining present for the family and world that raised him. Convinced that Earth deserves its own Nova just as much as the galaxy does, Sam embraces the mantle of Kid Nova, determined to become an even better hero than the one who inspired him.
