Robert Todd, once feared as the supervillain Mister Bones, is a genetically engineered metahuman whose life was shaped by manipulation, imprisonment, and government secrecy. Originally created through illegal human experimentation as part of the Helix Project, Robert eventually evolved from a child criminal into one of the most influential intelligence figures in the United States government after being adopted and mentored by Amanda Waller herself. Now operating publicly as Director Bones, Robert serves as the Director of National Security, head of Belle Reve, and leader of Task Force X, carrying the burden of maintaining order through methods that often blur the line between justice and state-sanctioned monstrosity.

Early Life

Robert Todd was one of several metahuman children created through the Helix Project, a series of experimental procedures conducted by the scientist Doctor Benjamin Love. The project focused on manipulating human genetics during early development, producing unstable but powerful children intended to surpass ordinary humanity. Among the subjects created through these experiments, Robert quickly distinguished himself due to both his intelligence and the terrifying mutations affecting his body.

Eventually becoming known as Mister Bones, Robert developed a translucent cyanide-producing physiology that made physical contact with him lethally dangerous. Combined with his tactical instincts and emotional restraint, these abilities allowed him to naturally emerge as one of the central leaders of Helix during the group’s activities as a child supervillain team.

For years, Helix operated in conflict with various heroic organizations before eventually being captured by the modern Justice Society of America. Following their defeat, the members of Helix spent years imprisoned, viewed less as children and more as dangerous scientific accidents created by reckless experimentation.

During this period, Amanda Waller became interested in Robert Todd after observing the leadership and discipline he demonstrated even while incarcerated. Unlike most government officials, Waller did not simply see a monster or failed experiment. She recognized potential.

Under her supervision, Robert was gradually removed from the identity of Mister Bones and introduced to military structure, intelligence operations, and national security strategy. Waller raised him within the world of covert government activity, teaching him that power was most effective when hidden behind institutions rather than costumes.

As Robert matured, he began participating in increasingly dangerous operations carried out jointly between the United States government and sanctioned metahuman forces. One of the most significant missions involved the liberation of Kanhad during a large-scale international conflict. The operation became known as a major success for both the government and the superhero community, particularly because it resulted in the capture of Black Adam.

The mission solidified Robert’s reputation as a capable strategist and operative, further strengthening Amanda Waller’s trust in him. Over time, he became one of her closest advisors, assisting in highly classified decisions connected to A.R.G.U.S., covert military intervention, and intelligence management.

Amanda concealed the existence of the Suicide Squad not out of distrust, but because of how politically dangerous and deeply classified the project truly was. Robert only gradually came to understand the scale of the organization and the moral compromises required to sustain it.

Everything changed after the destruction of a government intelligence facility in San Monté.

For months, the incident remained buried beneath military secrecy until the silence was finally broken during a public press conference. Government officials announced that Amanda Waller was solely responsible for the disaster, accusing her of secretly leading a terrorist organization that intended to sell American intelligence to foreign powers. According to the official narrative, the destruction of the facility resulted in the deaths and disappearances of numerous agents connected to her operation.

By publicly sacrificing her own reputation and exposing fragments of Task Force X, Waller created enough political distraction to disappear from public life while settling unfinished matters connected to her past. Before leaving, however, she carefully arranged for Robert Todd to inherit her influence and responsibilities.
