Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock is a mutant telepath from Essex, England, and one of the heirs to the mystical legacy of Britannia. Born into the influential Braddock family alongside her brothers Jamie and Brian, Betsy grew up surrounded by privilege, psychic training, and expectations tied to a destiny far older than any of them understood. While Brian became the public symbol of Britain’s heroism as Lord Britain and Jamie descended into madness as the reality-warping Monarch, Betsy followed a more secretive path, mastering her psychic abilities and eventually becoming an operative of STRIKE’s Psi Division.

After years away from her family’s mystical responsibilities, a mysterious letter intended for Brian forced Betsy to reconnect with her brothers, the legacy of Avalon, and the mantle she had long abandoned: Lady Britain.

Early Life

Betsy Braddock was born in Essex, England, as the daughter of the wealthy and mysterious Braddock couple, alongside her older brother Jamie and her twin brother Brian. From childhood, the family dynamic was unstable beneath its aristocratic image.

Jamie, the eldest sibling, was deeply jealous of his younger brother and sister, refusing to cultivate any meaningful relationship with them. Even before his descent into madness, he already carried resentment toward the expectations and favoritism surrounding the Braddock legacy. Meanwhile, Brian was a sensitive and intellectual child who preferred books and isolation over competition, while Betsy displayed extraordinary psychic potential at an early age.

Recognizing her mutation, Betsy’s parents hired Charles Xavier to privately tutor her. Xavier’s lessons went beyond simple telepathy: he taught her how to organize, compartmentalize, and preserve memories inside her own mind, training her discipline before power. Those teachings became the foundation of Betsy’s future as both a telepath and intelligence operative.

As her psionic powers developed further, Betsy was recruited into the STRIKE Psi Division, where she trained as a secret agent specializing in psychic operations. While Brian publicly embraced heroism, Betsy operated from the shadows, becoming increasingly detached from the mystical destiny surrounding her family.

The Braddock family eventually collapsed after the deaths of Betsy’s parents. Their absence accelerated Jamie’s psychological instability. Having inherited wealth and status, Jamie pursued a reckless career in motorsport racing, accumulating debts, enemies, and emotional instability instead of success.

Manipulated by aristocratic acquaintances, Jamie traveled to an old Braddock property in M’bangawi, Africa. The estate had secretly become the headquarters of an anti-democratic militia led by the brutal Doc Croc. Jamie’s companions were executed, while he himself was subjected to horrific torture and experimentation intended to uncover possible connections to European espionage networks.

The trauma awakened Jamie’s dormant mutant powers. His mind deteriorated rapidly as he gained the ability to manipulate reality itself, perceiving existence as threads he could pull apart and reshape. During this breakdown, Jamie destroyed the engine of his parents’ private aircraft mid-flight using his powers, causing the crash that nearly killed his siblings.

Betsy survived the accident alongside Brian, becoming one of only two survivors. Carrying her injured brother through a freezing forest while desperately searching for help, she eventually found refuge within an ancient stone structure arranged in a circular formation. There, she used the psychic techniques Xavier had taught her to preserve Brian’s consciousness and keep his fractured mind intact.

Inside the ruins, the twins encountered a luminous mystical figure who introduced herself as Roma of Avalon, the New Hierophant. Roma healed Brian and revealed the truth about their lineage: the Braddocks were heirs to the ancient Templar Order of Britannia, successors to a mystical legacy tied to Avalon itself.

Brian was offered two artifacts, the Amulet of Right and the Amulet of Might, and chose the path of wisdom and responsibility over brute force. Thus, he became Lord Britain. Betsy was also called to inherit the mantle of Lady Britain, but unlike her brother, she soon abandoned the role, believing the burden would bring only suffering and endless conflict.
