The Crooked Queen is a mutant clone created by Mister Sinister as a duplicate of Jean Grey, originally designed to serve only as a vessel for genetic experimentation. After escaping Essex’s laboratories during an X-Men assault, she vanished from the world and eventually fell under the influence of Chthon, the ancient God of Chaos.
M-4D was created deep within one of Mister Sinister’s hidden laboratories, engineered as a perfect clone of Jean Grey. Unlike Jean, however, she was never meant to live freely or even develop an identity of her own.
Her purpose was simple: remain unconscious while serving as a biological incubator for one of Essex’s experiments involving the Summers bloodline. Inside the facility, she was referred to only as: “Mutant 4-District Level: Prior.”
For years, she remained dormant within containment systems beneath the laboratory until the day the X-Men invaded Essex’s operations. During the battle against the Marauders, the damage caused to the facility awakened the clone prematurely, triggering a violent and traumatic childbirth process connected to the synthetic embryo inside her body. Disoriented and terrified, the clone escaped into the chaos before the X-Men could locate her, nobody went after her.
Lost and psychologically fractured, M-4D wandered through isolated regions far from civilization, haunted by incomplete memories and emotions that did not belong to her. Jean Grey’s face existed within her mind, but none of Jean’s humanity came with it.
A presence hidden outside time itself began speaking to her through dreams and whispers. Its name was nearly impossible to pronounce, though old texts referred to it as Chthon, the primordial God of Chaos.
Through him, M-4D learned about Morgana Le Fay and the unfinished creation of the Darkhold, the cursed Book of the Damned. Long ago, Morgana attempted to summon Chthon into reality using forbidden rituals before Merlin sealed Camelot away within the Otherworld, imprisoning her beyond space and time.
Chthon needed someone capable of reopening that path, and the clone, broken and forgotten by the world, became the perfect vessel.
As his influence spread through her mind, M-4D slowly abandoned what little identity she had left behind. Her powers evolved beyond mutant telepathy into something darker, merging psychic abilities with infernal magic and chaos manipulation.
Now, the Crooked Queen moves through the hidden corners of Avalon and the Otherworld searching for ways to free Morgana Le Fay and complete Chthon’s ancient plans.
Her appearance has become increasingly unnatural under the corruption surrounding her. Black tendrils spread beneath her skin like living ink, while fragments of forbidden symbols appear across her body as though the Darkhold itself is being written into her flesh.
Unlike Jean Grey, whose psychic abilities were rooted in empathy and connection, the Crooked Queen channels fear, suffering, and emotional instability. Her magic feeds on broken minds and fractured realities.
Despite her transformation, traces of the original clone still surface occasionally. Beneath the corruption exists someone deeply abandoned, confused, and consumed by the need to understand why she was created only to be discarded.
To the mystics of Avalon, the Crooked Queen is no longer seen as merely a mutant clone. She has become something closer to an omen, a living connection between chaos magic, the Darkhold, and the buried horrors hidden beyond the walls of Camelot.
And with every passing day, the barriers protecting the Otherworld continue to weaken around her presence.
