Johann Schmidt was one of the most infamous products of Nazi Germany and the living embodiment of Hydra’s twisted ideology. Once a loyal officer of the Third Reich, Schmidt volunteered for an experimental version of the Super-Soldier program, hoping to become the perfect weapon for the Axis powers.

The experiment succeeded in enhancing his body but grotesquely deformed his appearance, permanently transforming him into the monster known as the Red Skull.

For decades he led Hydra from the shadows, waging war against governments, heroes, and even his own former allies in pursuit of power, vengeance, and the triumph of his ideology.

Early Life

During World War II, Hydra operated as a secret subdivision of the German government dedicated to pursuing scientific, technological, and even occult advancements that could secure victory for the Axis powers. The organization's greatest minds collaborated on numerous projects intended to create the ultimate weapons of war, including a super-soldier program designed to produce a perfect human combatant.

One of the project's original creators, Hayato Sataki, became horrified by the ideology surrounding the research and defected to the United States, bringing crucial portions of the work with him. Despite this setback, enough samples and research remained in Germany for Hydra's scientists to continue the project independently.

Among those most fascinated by the program was Johann Schmidt, a colonel deeply involved in Hydra's operations and one of the movement's most devoted believers. Determined to prove both the superiority of Hydra's ideals and his own worth, Schmidt volunteered to become the program's primary test subject.

The experiment was technically a success. Schmidt gained the enhanced physical abilities the scientists sought, creating one of the first true super-soldiers. However, unforeseen complications followed. His skin began to tighten and retract unnaturally, eventually exposing the shape of his skull beneath his flesh and leaving him with the horrifying appearance that would define him forever. Rather than seeing the result as a failure, Schmidt embraced the transformation as proof of his devotion to Hydra's cause.

Soon afterward, Allied forces discovered the location of Project Rebirth and launched an operation to shut it down. The raid became a massacre. Most of the research connected to the German Super-Soldier program was seized or destroyed, leaving only fragments behind. While the Americans ultimately succeeded in preserving their own version of the formula through Steve Rogers, Schmidt survived the collapse of Hydra's greatest scientific achievement and emerged as the organization's most dangerous remaining leader.

The United States transformed Captain America into a symbol of hope and patriotism. To Johann Schmidt, however, Steve Rogers represented everything he despised. Captain America became a constant reminder that Hydra had failed where America had succeeded. As years passed, Schmidt's hatred consumed him. His physical condition continued to deteriorate, leaving him unable to speak normally, unable to blink properly, and trapped inside a body that constantly reminded him of the price of his ambitions. Every breath became a source of pain, and every failure deepened his obsession with destroying both Captain America and the ideals he represented.

Thus, Johann Schmidt ceased to be merely a soldier of Hydra and became the Red Skull.

Decades after the war, Red Skull remained the hidden mastermind behind Hydra's global operations, orchestrating countless conspiracies and terrorist campaigns across the world. His greatest objective became the destruction of the United States itself and the symbolic defeat of Captain America.

His final and most ambitious operation involved the launch of a missile directed toward the American capital. The plan quickly escalated into a catastrophic confrontation. Hydra forces executed Colonel Dugan, neutralized Agent Carter's communications, and overwhelmed the defenses surrounding the launch site. During the battle, Bucky Barnes was gravely injured after being thrown from the facility by Red Skull himself.

The conflict culminated aboard the missile before launch. With no other heroes available to intervene, Captain America confronted Red Skull alone. In the ensuing struggle, Steve Rogers managed to trigger the weapon before it could reach its destination. The explosion destroyed the missile, killed Red Skull, and seemingly claimed Captain America's life as well.

Although Schmidt finally achieved what decades of warfare could not—forcing Captain America into a sacrifice that removed both men from the world—the victory proved hollow. Hydra lost its greatest leader, and Red Skull's crusade ended not with triumph, but with his own death alongside the enemy he had spent a lifetime trying to destroy.
