Biography

Early Life

Growing up in Harlem with hardworking parents who were rarely present, Carl gravitated toward street life. Alongside friends Willis Stryker, Tilda Johnson, and Elvin Haliday, he founded a group called the Rivals, acting both as a youth movement and a neighborhood patrol to keep threats like the Serpent Society out of their community.

His vigilantism often led to juvenile detention, sometimes for fighting criminals, other times for protecting his friends by taking the blame. After months in reform school, Carl returned to find everything changed: Elvin had moved to Europe, Tilda had joined the Maggia, and Willis had turned the Rivals into drug runners for the Serpent Society.

Enraged after learning the truth from Willis’s ex, Reva, Carl publicly beat his former friend—only for Willis to retaliate by framing him as the mastermind behind the entire operation. Arrested and sentenced, Carl was sent to Seagate Prison.

There, he endured secret scientific experiments aimed at recreating the Super-Soldier Serum. The procedures were brutal, permanently altering his body and giving him impenetrable skin that no needle could pierce. Deemed no longer useful, he was sent to die during a staged prison transfer—but instead, Carl escaped, unleashing powers even the scientists hadn’t fully understood.

Leaving his old identity behind, he became Luke Cage.
