Julia Carpenter, the second Madame Web, is a former college student whose life was destroyed after becoming a test subject in one of Oscorp’s attempts to recreate Spider-Man’s powers. Left blind and paralyzed after a radioactive spider experiment triggered a devastating autoimmune condition, Julia searched desperately for meaning and answers beyond the failures of science and fate. That search eventually led her to Cassandra Webb and the mystical ritual known as the Gathering Five, where Julia inherited the mantle of Madame Web and became the living guardian of the Web of Existence itself. Since then, she has operated in secrecy as one of the central protectors of the Spider-Verse, weaving together the countless stories and destinies connecting every Spider-Man across the multiverse.

Early Life

Julia Carpenter was once an ordinary young college student searching for opportunities to improve her academic future. Her fate changed permanently when she agreed to participate in a classified experiment in exchange for extra credit. Believing she had volunteered for a harmless athletic performance study, Julia instead became part of an Oscorp program attempting to replicate the powers of Spider-Man through scientific experimentation.

During the experiment, Julia was bitten by a radioactive spider.

Although the procedure succeeded in altering her physiology, it came with catastrophic consequences. The exposure triggered Myasthenia Gravis, a severe autoimmune disease that gradually destroyed her physical health. Despite years of treatment, the illness eventually left Julia blind and paralyzed. Oscorp faced legal action over the incident and agreed to cover her extensive medical expenses, but the corporation ultimately escaped responsibility through the contracts Julia had unknowingly signed before participating in the experiment.

The experience shattered Julia’s trust in fate and justice. Unable to accept the cruel randomness of what had happened to her, she began searching for answers outside conventional reality. This desperation eventually led her to a mysterious psychic advertised under the name Madame Web.

At first, Julia believed the woman was merely a fraud.

However, upon entering the psychic’s home, she realized she had interrupted a secret gathering already in progress. Attempting to leave, she was instead invited inside by the psychic herself, who introduced herself as Cassandra Webb. Cassandra explained that fate had guided Julia there intentionally.

The gathering centered around an ancient mystical ceremony known as the Gathering Five.

According to Cassandra, five ambitious individuals would each offer a deeply personal object connected to their lives. In exchange, fate itself would grant each participant a unique blessing. Four members had already arrived before Julia’s appearance, while the fifth participant was meant to be chosen by destiny itself.

Julia confessed she had brought nothing with her. In response, Cassandra handed her a blindfold.

The ritual began. That night, five people became avatars of destiny itself, each transformed by the gifts they received. Cassandra Webb offered her wedding dress and was granted death, finally ending the immortality that had trapped her existence for years. Julia Carpenter offered the blindfold and received power, becoming the successor to Madame Web and inheriting the responsibility of carrying the stories and destinies woven throughout existence itself.

The remaining members of the Gathering Five were transformed as well.

Miles Warren, a university professor obsessed with recognition and intellectual greatness, offered his newly published book in pursuit of fame. Fate granted him knowledge beyond mortal comprehension. He became an avatar of consciousness whose mind collapsed beneath the weight of universal understanding, leaving him capable of communicating only through answering the questions of others.

Norman Osborn entered the ritual carrying a goblin mask, seeking the courage necessary to become Spider-Man’s greatest hunter. Instead of courage, fate rewarded him with madness. The once-powerful industrialist became trapped in an endless psychological cycle of obsession, humiliation, and self-destruction, compelled to pursue Spider-Man with manic desperation while unconsciously seeking defeat.

Finally, Johnathon Ohnn arrived carrying his medical records and asked for immortality. Fate instead granted him non-existence. His body and identity transformed into something that existed between dimensions themselves, becoming the being known as the Spot, a creature who would continue existing even beyond the death of universes.

Through these events, Julia began understanding the deeper truth behind the Spider-Verse itself.

According to the knowledge inherited through Madame Web, every universe inevitably creates its own Spider-Man because of a multiversal paradox woven directly into existence. In every reality, a spider subjected to scientific experimentation is secretly replaced by a perfect duplicate originating from another universe. That displaced spider inevitably escapes and finds an unsuspecting host, ensuring that the cycle always repeats and that a Spider-Man will always exist somewhere within the web of reality.
