Early Life

Contrary to popular belief, Krypton did not perish in a single day.

When Kara Zor-El was only five solar cycles old, emergency survival protocols were activated as the planet approached its inevitable destruction. The coastal city of Argo City managed to separate itself from Krypton before the planet's final collapse, surviving within an enormous mechanical dome that protected its inhabitants from the vacuum of space.

Survival, however, came at an unimaginable cost.

For the next ten years, Argo City drifted through deep space in complete isolation, cut off from every neighboring civilization. Over time, prolonged exposure to the asteroid beneath the city caused the structure to oxidize into Kryptonite, a radioactive mineral that slowly poisoned everyone living inside the dome.

The effects became catastrophic.

Nearly two-thirds of Argo City's population perished from Kryptonite poisoning, including Kara's own mother. As the years passed, the city adopted a single unbreakable law: no one could leave. Any object capable of piercing the protective membrane surrounding the city would compromise the dome and expose everyone inside to the vacuum of space. The people of Argo accepted that they would die together rather than risk the destruction of the last surviving fragment of Krypton.

Kara's father, Zor-El, refused to surrender.

Throughout those desperate years, he preserved one final gift left behind by his brother—a spacecraft originally constructed to carry his infant son, Kal-El, to a habitable world. Once believing his brother had been a paranoid fanatic, Zor-El eventually realized that Jor-El had been right all along.

When Kara reached fifteen solar cycles of age, her father placed her aboard that very spacecraft.

To convince her to leave, Kara was led to believe that the rest of Argo City would soon follow behind her. Instead, moments after departing, she looked back and witnessed the final destruction of her home as the city shattered into the emptiness of space.

The loss marked the true end of Krypton in Kara's eyes.

Her journey became even stranger when her spacecraft passed through a newly formed black hole. What felt like only fifteen minutes aboard the ship became fifteen years in the outside universe, carrying her across both space and time before she finally reached her destination.

Eventually, Kara crash-landed on a farm on Earth, where she met the cousin she had only known through family stories.

The infant Kal-El had grown into a man.

He welcomed Kara into his home alongside the Kent family, offering her the life and family she believed she had lost forever.

Although Kara found comfort on Earth, she never truly considered it a replacement for Krypton.

She enjoys life among humanity. She finds Metropolis pleasant, appreciates her cousin Kal's kindness, and has grown fond of the Kents. Yet every step she takes reminds her of the world she lost and the people who never escaped Argo City's fate.

Fortunately, Earth possesses one remarkable advantage over Krypton.

Beneath the light of the planet's yellow sun, Kara's Kryptonian physiology underwent a dramatic transformation. She became nearly indestructible, capable of traversing outer space itself and wielding incredible power far beyond what she had possessed on her homeworld.

These abilities allow her, if only briefly, to leave behind the grief that continues to follow her.

Parties, friendships, romance, and even taking Krypto for walks help brighten her life, but none of those things define who she is. What truly keeps Kara moving forward is fighting to protect the galaxy and everyone who cannot defend themselves.

Many people speak of Krypton as though it were nothing more than a tragedy or a forgotten civilization.

Kara refuses to accept that belief.

To her, Krypton still lives through its stories, its lessons, and the values she carries into every world she visits. As long as she continues protecting others, the legacy of her people will never disappear.

Today, Kara serves as Supergirl, fighting alongside her newly formed R.E.B.E.L.S. to defend planets across the galaxy. In her eyes, hope did not perish with Krypton. It survived through her, and she intends to ensure it endures for generations to come.
