Mari McCabe, a successful model and socialite, is also the heroic Vixen, wielder of the legendary Tantu Totem. Inheriting both a family legacy and mystical connection to the Red—the life force of the animal kingdom—she uses her powers to fight for animals and justice. Though her path has been shaped by family feuds, espionage, and dangerous missions, she remains a fierce protector of both wildlife and humanity.
Mari McCabe was born in M’Changa, Zambesi, into a family that owned the largest olive oil production empire in the world, with mills spread across the Zambesi region. Her life changed when her grandfather chose her to inherit the legendary Tantu Totem—a family necklace symbolizing social ascension and success. But the totem held a deeper secret: a mystical bond with the Red, the animal kingdom incarnate, granting its bearer unimaginable powers.
After moving to America, Mari built a career as a model and socialite while secretly using her powers as Vixen, a heroine and animal activist. Her missions were often covert, fighting for years without public attention.
When she was chosen to inherit the Tantu Totem half of her family was quiclkly took by envy and hate, as her uncle, Mustapha Maksai, believed his family was the one who should be blessed by the great ancestors of Tantu.
During a planned sabbatical to visit M’Changa, Mari’s journey was interrupted at the airport when officials discovered a time bomb in her luggage—a parting “gift” from the Maksai family, meant as a final gesture since they believed they wouldn’t be there when she was released from prison.
Vixen’s reputation caught the attention of many while imprisioned, including the Justice League and Amanda Waller. Batman contacted her believing she could reach freedom if she helped the Justice League to dismantle the Task-Force-X from the inside, as she would be chosen to integrate Waller's secret team.
After working together, VIxen was qucikly invited to be a founder member of the Justice League.
Years after proving her innocence of crimes falsely attributed to her by her own relatives, Mari McCabe decided to now finally return to Zambezi to reclaim her share of the McCabe family legacy.
Once home, she learned that her aunt—current heir to the family fortune—had married Mustapha Maksai, the man responsible for overthrowing Mari’s father and whom Mari believes orchestrated her parents’ murder. Though the direct culprits have been found and punished, the political damage Maksai caused still scars Zambezi.
General Maksai transformed Zambezi into an authoritarian regime, aligning the country with Beatriz Zazzala and aiding Greater Bialya in its war against Qurac.
Mari, already operating as Vixen, returned with the clear goal of liberating her people from Maksai’s influence—unaware that her return was part of a much larger design orchestrated not by politics, but by mythology.
It was the god Anansi, the mythic architect behind the Tantu Totem, who manipulated the events that led Vixen back to her homeland.
Anansi imprisoned the warrior essence inside the Totem so that Mari would stop concerning herself only with human injustices and instead confront her deeper connection to the Red, the primal life-force of animals.
This return to the source of her gifts was not a punishment but a revelation: Vixen was meant to reconnect with the Totem, not just wield it.
Anansi unveiled before her a vast tapestry of possible futures, each woven around Mari’s choices—her involvement with the Red, or her neglect of it. In these visions:
She was absorbed completely by the animal kingdom
She sacrificed herself to save nature
She renounced her powers
She became a destructive force
She died defending the balance
She rose as the avatar of all natural forces
Every possible fate shared one constant: Vixen.
Anansi made it clear that: The fate of the natural world already lies in Vixen’s hands. Time is always rewriting itself. The past is unchangeable, but her future choices determine which path of glory she will walk.
Whether the pact with the Totem was made yesterday, years ago, or hasn’t yet been made, Vixen is—and always has been—central to the survival of the Red.
After finally proving her innocence regarding the crimes that had long been attributed to her family, Mari McCabe returned to Zambezi to assume her place within the family legacy. There she discovered that her aunt, the current matriarch of the McCabe lineage, had orchestrated the coup that removed Mari’s father from power years earlier and remained convinced that both he and Mari were responsible for crimes they had never committed. With her family’s reputation finally restored, Mari found herself forced to confront the political consequences of a nation still divided by old wounds and unresolved rivalries.
At the same time, General Mkasai tightened his grip over the region, transforming neighboring lands into an increasingly authoritarian regime under the influence of Beatriz Zatara. Determined to challenge the growing oppression, Vixen joined a resistance movement operating against Urac. Although she fought to expose the regime and free those suffering under its rule, the conflict forced her to confront the reality that many struggles could not be solved through strength alone.
During this period, Mari was chosen by the god Anansi to undertake a spiritual trial connected to the powers of Tantu Totem itself. Within a realm woven from infinite timelines and possible futures, she witnessed countless versions of her own life and destiny. Some showed her ruling the natural world as its divine avatar, while others revealed worlds where she sacrificed everything to save others, lost her powers, or never became a hero at all. Through these visions, Mari came to understand that time, fate, and possibility are interconnected forces, and that while the future may influence the choices one makes, it cannot fully define who a person becomes.
Emerging from this experience transformed, Mari accepted a deeper connection to the Red, the force that links all animal life and the natural world. As Vixen, she now serves not only as a hero and protector of humanity, but also as a living guardian of nature itself, carrying the gifts of Tantu Totem with a renewed understanding of her place within the world and the destiny that has always awaited her.
