Zatanna Zatara, also known as Grand Zatara, is a world-renowned magician, Mistress of Magic, and superhero from Gotham City, New Jersey. A descendant of the mystical Homo Magi, she inherited powerful magical abilities and a deep legacy from her father, the legendary magician Giovanni “Grand” Zatara. Over her career, Zatanna has fought alongside the Justice League, confronted powerful magical and mortal threats, and risen to lead her own team of magic’s most trustworthy agents.
Zatanna Zatara was born to Giovanni “Grand” Zatara, a celebrated Italian magician and practitioner of the “S’drawkcab Hce’eps” line of magic, and Sindella, a powerful member of the Homo Magi—a magically gifted branch of humanity. The Homo Magi were created through evolution, but their recessive magical gene led many to isolate themselves from society as the Hidden Ones. Giovanni was the first non-Homo Magi to discover this parallel society and fell in love with Sindella. Tragically, Sindella died giving birth to Zatanna, a victim of mortal limitations despite her power.
Zatanna grew up under her father’s tutelage, inheriting his mastery of stagecraft and magic. At 18, she received a farewell letter from him after he was taken from her life. In it, he urged her never to give up, especially in times of danger. One of his most enduring lessons was to never abandon a performance after the first act.
Taking on her father’s mantle as Grand Zatara, Zatanna filled the void he left and grew into the new Mistress of Magic. She also fought alongside the Justice League, protecting the world from supernatural and mundane threats. Her reputation for precision, creativity, and dedication made her one of the most respected figures in the magical community.
As crime began to decline thanks to the Justice League’s efforts, Zatanna found herself with more time to lead her own team. John Constantine sought her help in gathering the most trustworthy magical agents from across realms of life, death, and in-between.
However, her time with the League was not without controversy. Six years prior, a dangerous incident involving Arthur Light—a villain who assaulted Sue Dibny—led to a moral crossroads for the League. Fatigued and seeking to prevent such horrors, some members proposed a Secret Pact to erase the minds of the worst offenders. Zatanna, with her unique magical ability to alter memories, was to be the one to carry it out. Before the decision could be finalized, Batman discovered the plan and objected—only to be frozen in time by Zatanna so the vote could proceed. The majority agreed to keep this pact hidden from the Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman). Who never discovered the truth. Until now.
