The Joker is Gotham’s most unpredictable and terrifying criminal mind, a man with no clear origin, defined instead by chaos, cruelty, and a warped sense of humor. Known for orchestrating psychological and physical horrors, his actions have permanently scarred the city and its heroes, culminating in one of the darkest events: The Massacre.

Early Life

Very little is known about the true origins of the Joker, and what fragments exist are contradictory, almost as if he deliberately obscures his past. One recurring account tells of a failed comedian who, desperate to pay for his wife’s medical treatment, agreed to participate in a robbery. Disguised as a criminal, he crossed paths with a masked vigilante and, in the chaos, fell into a vat of chemicals, an incident that supposedly transformed him into the pale, grinning figure known as the Joker.

Whether this story is true or just another of his “jokes” remains uncertain. What is known is that, at some point, he emerged in Gotham as a force of anarchy, driven not by wealth or power, but by the desire to break people mentally, morally, and emotionally.

After years of escalating crimes, including mass murder attempts and psychological terror campaigns, the Joker was eventually captured and brought to trial. Declared legally insane, he was committed to Arkham Asylum, where he underwent extensive psychiatric treatment under Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

During this period, rather than being rehabilitated, the Joker manipulated those around him. His influence over Dr. Quinzel would prove especially dangerous, ultimately leading to his release and setting the stage for one of Gotham’s greatest tragedie

After escaping Arkham, the Joker executed a meticulously planned attack that would become known as The Massacre, one of Gotham’s darkest events. 

His target was a charity center funded by Bruce Wayne, a refuge for troubled children supervised by Leslie Thompkins and her Sisters of Charity. What followed was an act of calculated brutality: 

• In the early hours of the morning, the Joker infiltrated the building.

• He shot Barbara Gordon, the young receptionist, leaving her paraplegic.

• He entered the dormitories and murdered two children, Carrie and Duke.

• A third child, Stephanie Brown, was shot and left permanently deaf.

• Other children attempted to resist, preventing further killings.

• Leslie Thompkins managed to secure the survivors in a safe room but was shot in the back during the process.
